Leibniz Supercomputing Centre

A future-proof website for one of Germany's most important IT institutions

The Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) is the IT service provider for Munich’s universities and research institutions, supporting an ever-growing number of academic organizations in the greater Munich area. It also ranks among Europe’s leading high-performance computing centres.

The Task

The existing LRZ website had become outdated in terms of structure, usability, visual design, and accessibility. The goal was to relaunch the site to reflect the institute’s technological excellence and scientific relevance. Several target groups had to be addressed equally: academics, researchers, job seekers, and companies—who should not only be informed but also inspired by the LRZ’s services. The new website needed to provide high flexibility, intuitive navigation, easy backend management, and full accessibility compliance. The complexity and scale of content posed a major challenge.

The Solution

We began with an in-depth analysis of the existing content types, page structures, and user needs. Based on these insights, we developed a new information architecture and a revised wireframe system tailored to multiple user groups. These were presented and refined in joint workshops. The visual design was completely reimagined, featuring updated and expanded color schemes for key topics, a modern imagery style, and intuitive UX/UI elements. The technical implementation in the TYPO3 CMS was carried out in close collaboration with our development partner, datamints GmbH.
